The football season has well and truly kicked off across Victoria and recycled water is helping make the grass greener at some ovals for the first time this year.

On average a full-sized AFL ground requires up to 15 million litres of water per year, comparable to the usage of 70 households. A top condition plating surface is best for good quality footy and helps keeps players safe.

Using recycled water provides a reliable water source without using our valuable drinking supplies.

In Horsham a new Wastewater Treatment Plant is providing up to 126 million litres of recycled water for irrigation per year which goes to local greenspaces such as Horsham City Oval which is home to the Demons, parks and even a racecourse.

Ballarat Grammar oval stays green thanks to Class A recycled water from the Ballarat North Treatment which benefited from $1 million from the Integrated Water Management fund.

Barkly Park Reserve in North East Victoria, which is home to the Rutherglen Cats Football Netball Club, have doubled their recycled water usage this year to nearly 10 million litres.

Green spaces are key for communities offering a wealth of social, environmental and health benefits. By using recycled water to support our communities, we also benefit from less wastewater being discharged into oceans and natural water ways.
