Victoria faces lower water storage levels this summer compared to previous years, making it more important than ever to reduce water waste.
The Annual Water Outlook has now been released, providing the latest information on the conditions of each water supply system across the state and a 12-month water forecast. The Outlook keeps Victorians informed about water supplies for the coming year and outlines contingency plans water corporations have in place to manage potential shortages.
Most of the state received below average rainfall in 2025, with some Victorian towns placed on water restrictions for the first time in 5 years. With these dry conditions, Victoria’s water storages levels have dropped, with storages at 60% capacity as at 16 December, trending down 20% compared to the same time last year.
Water restrictions are not expected for Greater Melbourne in 2026 with water storages currently at 75% capacity but trending 12% lower than this time last year. Total storage levels across regional Victoria’s water storages are 57% full, trending down 21% compared to this time last year.
Without the 50 billion litres of desalinated water, Melbourne’s water storages would have continued to fall as catchments received a low winter and spring harvest. The Victorian Desalination Plant has supplied more than 505 billion litres of safe drinking water to Greater Melbourne over the past decade.
To help reduce waste, permanent water Saving rules are in place throughout the state. The rules ensure we use water wisely outdoors, even when water restrictions do not apply.
The rules include using hoses that are leak-free with a trigger nozzle for all uses, including washing cars and gardens, only using garden drippers and sprinklers before 10 am and after 6 pm and using a broom to sweep down hard surfaces instead of the hose.
