The Campaspe River flows from the Great Dividing Range near Woodend to the Murray River at Echuca. The Caring for the Campaspe project aims to significantly improve the health and resilience of the river and foster widespread community involvement and stewardship.
Over the next 30 years, its banks will be stabilised and provide a consistent native vegetation corridor. Water released for the environment will provide food and habitat for fish and platypus and will replenish important river red gums downstream, and barriers to fish migration will be reduced.
Over 130 landholders and ten community groups have participated in the project. Extensive areas along the river have been revegetated and fenced in partnership with Parks Victoria, Landcare and Traditional Owner groups. Fixed-point photo monitoring points (‘Fluker posts’) have been installed at key sites along the Campaspe to track visual changes of the river restoration works over time. Locals and visitors will be encouraged to take photos at these fixed points and post them to an online image library. Caring for the Campaspe photos can be seen in the following Fluker Post albums:
