As part of the Our Environment Our Future, 'coasts, bays, marine and river environments' was one of five focus areas for environmental action and improvement.  This initiative to protect the health of the internationally renowned Gippsland Lakes aligns with that focus area and delivers practical, onground environmental works in 2015-16 and supports improved management arrangements for the Gippsland Lakes.

Actions are guided by the relevant management plans and strategies, particularly the Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site Management Plan and regional waterway strategies.

The initiative builds on similar work recently completed in the region. This work was largely co-ordinated by the Gippsland Lakes Ministerial Advisory Committee (GLMAC), which expired in June 2015.

Total EC3 investment to date: $2.500 m

2015-16 expenditure: $220,000

Due to unavoidable delays in the finalisation of environmental management plans required for the delivery of this initiative, the remaining 2015-16 funding has been allocated to projects that are set for delivery in 2016-17.


July-October:  Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site Management Plan (GLRSMP) was developed with extensive public consultation.  The GLRSMP provides the blueprint for managing the Ramsar site over the next eight years. Selection and appointment processes for the new Gippsland Lakes Coordinating Committee (GLCC) undertaken.

November: GLRSMP finalised and released.

December:  Composition of the GLCC finalised, forging a strong agency and community partnership to oversee the management of the lakes for the next five years.  Announced by the Minister for Water in Sale.

March-April:  GLCC Delivery Managers established for implementing actions to meet the requirements of the GLCC Priorities Plan (see below).  The Delivery Managers are: East and West Gippsland CMA, East Gippsland Shire, Wellington Shire, Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC - representing Traditional Owners from the Brataualung, Brayakaulung, Brabralung, Krauatungalung and Tatungalung family clans), Parks Victoria, and Regional DELWP.

March: GLCC Delivery Managers establish project to support the GLaWAC natural resource management works crew to collaborate with local agencies to identify works around the Gippsland Lakes that will benefit the natural environment, build capacity of GLaWAC and benefit the community. GLaWAC will co-ordinate works with the agencies/landholders to ensure the projects run smoothly and have good environmental and social outcomes.

March-May: Development and finalisation of the GLCC Priorities Plan.  The Plan identifies the priorities for the funding of on ground projects that the GLCC can approve.  This Plan is closely aligned to the GLRSMP.  The four key priority themes are:

  1. Maintaining and restoring habitats
  2. Protecting fauna
  3. Managing nutrients
  4. Managing water regimes
