Progress

This initiative funded development of the final Victorian Floodplain Management Strategy, which was released in April 2016. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) developed the Strategy with input from key stakeholders in floodplain management and the broader Victorian community. It draws on extensive consultation following the floods in Victoria during 2010-12, and builds on the existing government policy in response to a review of the Flood Warnings in Victoria and the Government's Response to the Victorian Floods Review.

The strategy helps Victorian communities be better prepared for future floods. It clarifies the roles and responsibilities of government agencies and authorities involved in flood management, and aims to improve the evaluation and communication of flood risks so that communities and relevant agencies can take better-informed action to manage floods.

The initiative has also funded a works program to improve the management and maintenance of flood mitigation infrastructure, especially levees and waterways. Design and/or construction of flood mitigation works is being undertaken for Charlton, Donald, Violet Town  and Carisbrook, while construction of flood mitigation works for Rochester has been completed.

Ten regional flood mapping projects have also been completed for Fitzroy. These flood mapping projects have been undertaken to support land-use planning, community awareness and flood emergency planning in rural and regional areas.
