New water strategy for Gippsland released
10 May 2012
Water Minister Peter Walsh has released a comprehensive water management plan for Gippsland which maps out the challenges and opportunities facing all water users over the next 50 years.
Mr Walsh said the strategy includes actions to help improve the health of Gippsland’s river and waterways and to secure water supplies for agriculture, industry, business and homes.
These include establishing a drought reserve in Blue Rock Reservoir, investing $10 million to improve the health of the Gippsland Lakes and providing extra water to be allocated to agriculture and industry.
The strategy was developed by the Gippsland Region Consultative Committee chaired by Llew Vale, following wide consultation through the region.
Stakeholder forums were held in Leongatha, Maffra, Traralgon, Orbost and Bairnsdale and more than 150 written submissions were received from stakeholders, businesses and the community.
“The strategy provides flexibility to deal with uncertainties and future climate conditions or economic circumstances,” Mr Vale said.
“Its implementation will involve many individuals and organisations across Gippsland.”
