River Health Report Card

The Victorian Government’s River Health Program aims for healthy rivers, floodplains and estuaries to benefit all Victorians. By tackling the causes of poor river health, and collectively treating the problems of low flows, declining water quality and degraded riverine habitats, the program will restore unhealthy rivers in the long term while protecting healthy ones. This will:

  • sustain riverine habitats for our unique animals and plants
  • provide ongoing recreational, tourism and fishing opportunities
  • reduce the costs of providing high quality water.

The Victorian River Health Strategy was released in 2002. It outlines Victoria’s river management approach and establishes a clear vision to protect and restore rivers of high community value.
