Streamflows - March 2012

Record-high and above average rainfall across the north-east of the State resulted in flooding in some parts of the State this month, including major flooding on the Murray River (upstream of Hume) and Broken Creek in the first week of March. Moderate flooding occurred in other north-east catchments, including the Kiewa, Ovens and Goulburn.

Fifteen of the 28 representative gauging stations recorded end-of-month flows that were well above the March average.  These stations were located in the Alpine region, parts of eastern, south-eastern and south-western Victoria.  In the west, five stations recorded flows below 10% of the March average, with only two of those stations recording no flows. Four stations recorded flows between 11 and 50% of the long-term average, while the remaining four stations recorded flows between 60 and 90% of the long-term average.

Apart from the stations that recorded no flow, all representative stations experienced end of month flows that was higher than the average flow recorded during 2006/07 drought, and higher than the March long term minimum.  In particular, the Snowy River downstream of Basin Creek recorded end-of-month flows almost 10 times the long-term March average for that station.
