Streamflows - January 2007

Given the prolonged dry conditions, catchments across the State are very dry and, despite the good rainfalls throughout January, nearly all streamflows remained well below the long-term January average.

The flow situation showed some temporary improvement over the month as a result of the good rainfalls. However, by the end of January, flows had begun to decline again.

At the end of the month, half of the reported stations still recorded zero flows. Including these sites, 75% of the State had streamflows that were below 10% of the long-term average flow for January. Flows recorded at 60% of the reported stations are the minimum ever recorded during January. (see map, graphs, and table)

The highest flows recorded (approx. 50% the long-term average) were for the Yarra River at Millgrove and the Merri River at Woodford, the former due in part to environmental releases from Upper Yarra catchments, and the latter due to heavy rainfall along the West Coast.

Flows can be expected to decline further if significant follow-up rains do not occur in February.
