Rainfall - January 2007

The first week of January brought welcome rains to the North east and West Gippsland. While the second week was dry, during the third week rainfall spread from the North Mallee through to West Gippsland. Drier conditions returned across the State towards the end of the month.

Rainfall totals during January were above to very much above average in the west of the State, with totals for some locations breaking previous January records. Hamilton received it’s highest ever recorded rainfall for January. The highest total rainfall (172 mm) was recorded at Casterton, which is 500% greater than the long-term average January rainfall for the region.

In contrast, totals for the month for much of eastern Victoria were below to very much below average. The rest of the State received average totals.

The Statewide average rainfall was 53 mm in January, compared with the historical average of 39 mm.

Across Victoria, daytime and night-time temperatures were generally above average. The statewide average maximum was 28.6°C, which is 1.3°C higher than the long-term average. Night time temperatures averaged 14.8°C (1.8°C higher than the January average).

Melbourne received 33 mm of rain during the month (average January rainfall: 47 mm). Melbourne’s average maximum temperature was slightly higher than usual (28.1°C, compared to a long-term average maximum temperature of 25.9°C).
