Streamflows - December 2006
December started with extremely dry weather conditions, relieved only by light patches of drizzle mid-month. The 23rd of December marked the beginning of significant rainfall events occurring throughout the State, however overall monthly rainfall levels remained below average for most of the State.
At the end of December, over 80% of the State had streamflows that were below 10% of the long-term average flow for the month. Flows recorded at nearly two-thirds of the gauged stations are the minimum ever recorded during December. More than half of the stations recorded no flows by month end. (see map, graphs, and table).
Five stations recorded flows above 10% of the long-term December average. The Snowy River downstream of Basin Ck, and on the Yarra River at Millgrove are maintained by environmental flow releases. Snowy Creek at Granite Flat and Merri River at Woodford both enjoyed higher flows from the rain in late December.
