Rainfall - December 2006
December 2006 was again dry across the State. Most of Victoria received below average rainfall for December, with parts of the southwest and east of the state receiving very much below average rainfall.
Across Victoria, daytime temperatures were generally above average, with a cold burst at Christmas time giving Melbourne its coldest Christmas Day on record 14.5°C, and bringing snowfalls at Mt Buller.
Melbourne received 18.2 mm of rain during the month (normal December rainfall: 58 mm). Melbourne’s average maximum temperature was slightly above average 25.4°C.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the current trend of higher than average daytime temperatures and lower than average rainfall is a result of higher than average temperatures in both the Pacific and Indian Oceans, with the effect from the Pacific being dominant (El Niño).
