Streamflows - January 2008

January began and ended with relatively dry weather conditions across the state. A significant rainfall event occurred on 19 January and provided most of Victoria with healthy rainfall totals over a period of 3 days. Although welcome, this rainfall did not provide a great deal of long-term improvement to Victorian streams, particularly in north central and western Victoria.

At the end of the month streams across two-thirds of the state were exhibiting flows less than 10% of the long-term average for January. Zero flow conditions were recorded at 8 of the 28 representative gauging stations, located throughout central and north western Victoria.

In contrast, a number of streams in Gippsland and the Alpine region of northeast Victoria were exhibiting flows in excess of the long-term average.

The current flow is equal to or higher than the average flow recorded in the 1982/83 drought at 17 gauging stations located throughout Gippsland and western and north eastern Victoria.
