Streamflows - February 2008

February began and ended with light falls across eastern and southern Victoria. Good rainfall was recorded in parts of the Alpine, Gippsland and Northeast districts; however, there were no significant rainfall events in the Mallee, Wimmera and parts of North Central Victoria.

At the end of the month, streams across two-thirds of the state were exhibiting flows less than 10% of the long-term average for February. No flow was recorded at 11 gauging stations throughout central, western and northern Victoria.

In contrast, the Mitchell River in eastern Victoria recorded flows in excess of the long-term average. A number of other streams in Gippsland and the Alpine region exhibited flows between 80-100% of the long-term average.

The current flow is equal to or lower than the average flow recorded in the 1982/83 drought at 12 gauging stations located in central, western and northern Victoria.
