Rainfall - February 2008

February rainfall totals were generally average across central and southwest Victoria, below average in the northwest and above average in the east.

At the end of February, parts of West Gippsland and the Northeast had received in excess of 200% of the long-term average rainfall for February. Generally, Northeast and Gippsland districts recorded rainfall totals in excess of 125% of the February average. Between 60 and 100% was recorded throughout Central and Western districts, whilst North Central and Northern Country districts received between just 20 and 60% of the February average. Southern Wimmera district received up to 60%; however northern Wimmera and Mallee districts did not record more than 20% of the February average.

The highest monthly total of 246.6 mm was recorded at Mt Baw Baw in upper northeast Victoria. Kyabram, Mildura, Nhill, Ouyen and Walpeup in northern Victoria experienced their lowest total February rainfall on record (0.0mm).

Temperatures were below average across the state during February. Maximum temperatures were between 1 and 4°C below average, whilst minimum temperatures were between 0 and 2°C lower than normal. Mount Buller experienced its lowest February temperature on record at -2.6°C on 29 February.

Melbourne received 24.4 mm of rain during the month, which is below the long-term February average of 45.8 mm. The average maximum temperature was 24.9°C. This is 1.1°C lower than the long-term February average.
