Streamflows - September 2007

Dry, warm and windy weather conditions resulted in a decrease in flows in most Victorian rivers and streams during September.

At the end of the month, 18 out of the 28 representative stations were recording flows of less than 10% of the long-term average for September (compared to 15 for August). As can be seen on the Streamflow Status map, these are located across most of northern, western, central and far-eastern Victoria and represent over three-quarters of the State. (see map, graphs, and table)

The Macalister River at Glencairn and the Moe River at Darnum recorded the highest flows of 73% and 72% of the long-term average for September respectively. Most streams in alpine and west Gippsland regions recorded flows between 40 and 60% of the September average. Stations throughout central Gippsland experienced flows between 20 - 40% of the long-term average.

At the end of September, flows at 10 representative stations were lower than those experienced during the 1982/83 drought. Four stations experienced zero flow conditions. The remaining 24 stations exhibited flows above the minimum flows recorded in September.
