Streamflows - November 2007
The month of November started with promising rainfalls over the whole state. Even the driest regions of Mallee and Wimmera received long awaited rain. Although the rainfall intensities weren’t great, falls were steady, lasting up to 4 days in some areas. This resulted in higher surface runoffs in all catchments and even some flood events in Gippsland and Northeast.
Although only one station, Macalister at Glencairn, experienced above average flows, a general improvement in streamflows has been observed across the state since last month.
At the end of the month, half of the representative stations were still recording flows of less than 10% of the long-term average for November (compared with 82% of stations at the end of October). This includes 5 stations covering the North, Northwest and Central regions which continue to exhibit no flows. (see map, graphs, and table)
At eighteen stations located mainly in Southwest, Otways, Gippsland and Alpine regions, the current flow is equal to or higher than the average flow recorded in the 1982/83 drought.
