Streamflows - December 2007
December began with dry weather conditions in the western Victoria and relatively light, showery conditions in the State’s east. Widespread heavy falls were recorded across the state between 19 and 23 December and resulted in good streamflows in many catchments and even some minor flooding in North Central Victoria. Dry conditions returned for the remainder of the month. (see map, graphs, and table)
Exceptionally high streamflows (for this time of year) were recorded around Mitiamo in North Central Victoria at the end of the month. Above average flows were also recorded in streams in Victoria’s alpine regions.
The current flow is equal to or higher than the average flow recorded in the 1982/83 drought in 23 stations, located mainly in the Southwest, Otways, Gippsland, North Central and Alpine regions.
Although heavy rainfall was recorded late in the month throughout the state, by 31 December about half of the state exhibited less than 10% of the long-term average for December. Three of these stations exhibited the lowest ever recorded December flows. Areas surrounding Ballarat and Geelong continued to produce little runoff, whilst the Cann River area was unusually dry for this time of year. Two stations within the Wimmera and Northwest region continue to exhibit no flows.
