Streamflows - April 2007

Despite the good rainfalls across most of the State, the streamflow situation has shown only a small improvement with the contour plot of streamflow being very similar to last month.

By the end of the month, 10 out of the 28 representative stations recorded no flow compared with 12 last month. These stations are located in the north-west of the State, down through the Wimmera region, and across to central regions of Victoria. Half the remaining stations recorded flows between 1-10% of the long-term average for April. (see map, graphs, and table)

In the west of the State, flows increased towards the south-west coast, reaching up to half the long-term April average. In the east of the State, Alpine areas and the Upper Murray region were also served well by rainfall, registering flows of 50-90% of the long-term average April flow. However, both south and far east Gippsland were slightly drier than last month.

Flows at 22 stations are lower than at the same time during the 1982/83 drought but 18 stations have higher values than the April historical minimum. Overall, around 68% of the State continues to have streamflows that are below 10% of the long-term average for the month.

While there was limited improvement in flows in response to April rains, these falls will have contributed to wetting-up of the soil store, enhancing prospects for runoff in response to future rainfall.
