Rainfall - August 2007

August 2007 was very dry across most of Victoria. Well below average rainfall was recorded in north-west, central and north-central Victoria. South-west Victoria, Alpine districts, and east and south Gippsland recorded below average falls. West Gippsland however, recorded rainfall close to the long-term average.

The highest total of 199.6 mm was recorded at Weeaproinah. The lowest total of 2.1 mm was recorded at Ouyen. Bundoora, Beechworth and Wangaratta recorded their lowest August rainfall totals on record, whilst 8 stations throughout the State recorded their lowest rainfall totals in 20 years.

Mean daily maximum temperatures were well above normal across the State, whilst minimum temperatures were mostly near normal.

Melbourne received just 15.0 mm of rain during the month, which is well below the long-term August average of 57.4 mm. The average maximum temperature was 17.3°C. This is 2.2°C higher than the August average.

Winter rainfalls were below average in northern Victoria and in the State’s far south-west. After promising falls in autumn, very much below average rainfall was recorded in parts of the Wimmera and along the River Murray in the State’s north-west. Western, Central and south Gippsland districts received average rainfall, whilst record falls in June ensured very much above average winter rainfall was recorded in Gippsland.
