Streamflows - February 2007

Streamflows improved somewhat as a result of February rains, particularly in the east of the State where good falls were received on the last day of the month. Streamflows have also improved around Warrnambool and west of Hamilton in the south west of the State, in the Yarra Valley (which may reflect releases from Upper Yarra reservoir) and in alpine areas

By the end of the month, only 10 out of the 28 representative stations still recorded no flow compared to 14 last month. Ten stations had current flows lower or equal to the minimum recorded in previous years, and 12 stations had their current flow lower or equal to 1982/83 drought flows. (see map, graphs, and table)

Overall, around 60% of the State had streamflows that were below 10% of the long-term average for February.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Genoa River in East Gippsland recorded exceptionally high flows, being 2005% of the long-term average (in response to heavy falls on the last day of the month).

Without follow-up rains, the improvements in streamflows recorded in February are likely to be relatively short-lived.

The following are graphs for the 28 streamflow guaging stations, showing long-term average daily streamflow, recorded minimum streamflow, streamflow in the 1982/83 drought and current daily streamflow.
