Storage Levels - February 2011
During the month, the total volume of water in most of Victoria’s major storages increased compared to the end of January. Most storages typically decrease over summer due to dry conditions and increased water use in hotter weather. However, since the beginning of the summer season, the volume of water in Victoria’s major storages has increased by more than 550 gigalitres (GL).
By the end of February, Victoria’s major storages were at 77.4% of total capacity. The volume of water in regional storages around Victoria increased, rising 2.5% to 81.6%.
Melbourne’s storage levels fluctuated slightly over the month in response to usage, hot weather and rainfall, finishing the month at 53.4% capacity. Overall, Melbourne’s storages gained 40 GL during the summer period, which is the first summer dam increase since 1985/86.
