Rainfall - January 2011

Halfway through the month, January 2011 was already the wettest January on record. Victoria had received almost three times its usual rainfall by the end of the month.

The highest rainfall of 289.6 mm was recorded at Mt William in the Grampians, while the rainfall station at Jeparit recorded the wettest single day for the month, with 161.2 mm on 12 January.  More than 60 rainfall stations recorded the wettest January on record.

The extraordinary rainfall was due to persistent low pressure systems bringing tropical moisture from the north, which led to widespread flooding across northern and western Victoria from mid-January and continued through to the end of the month.

However, rainfall in East and West Gippsland was average or below average.

Rainfall in the Melbourne region was average or above average.
