Streamflows - March 2010

Another month with intensive summer rainfalls has resulted in end-of-month stream flows similar to February. Five of the 28 representative stations, located in the Alpine, West Gippsland and West Coast regions recorded flow above 100% of the long-term March average.

At the end of the month, 11 stations experienced flow below 10% of the long-term March average, and eight of those stations recorded no flow.  These streams were typically located in the western half of the state.

Of the remaining stations, flow at seven stations ranged between 10 and 45% of the long-term average, while five recorded flow between 55 and 95% of the long-term March average.

The highest flow was recorded on the Macalister River at Glencairn at 265% of the long-term March average.

Compared to the average flow during the1982/83 drought, 16 stations recorded lower or equal end-of-month flow. Apart from the stations that recorded no flows, the remaining 20 stations all recorded flows higher than the historical minimum.
