Streamflows - August 2009

Close to average rainfall for both July and August has caused significant improvements in both the quantity and distribution of streamflow over the past month.

Of the 28 representative stations, 4 stations recorded flows above 100% of the long-term August average, while flows at another 2 stations were between 80 and 99% of the long-term average.  At the end of the month, even the recently very dry upper catchments of the Wimmera, Avoca and Loddon Rivers experienced flows between 10 and 59% of the long-term average for August.  Flows of less than 10% of the long-term August average were still recorded at 10 stations, including 3 stations with zero flows.

The highest flow of 204% of the long-term August average was recorded in the Barwon River at Ricketts Marsh.  The other stations with flows above 100% of the long-term August average were: the Glenelg River at Sandford (131%), Merri River at Woodford (124%), and Mitchell River at Glenaladale (104%).

Of the 28 representative stations, 20 have flows higher than August during the 1982/83 drought, while 23 have flows higher than the minimum for any August period on record.
