Rainfall - May 2008
May rainfall totals were below average across most of the State.
By the end of the month, most of the state had received between 40% and 80% of the long-term average rainfall for May. The situation was slightly better in the north and west, with the Wimmera and Mallee districts receiving between 60% and 100%, and the Western district receiving up to 80%. The Central, North Central, Northern Country and West and South Gippsland districts generally received between 40% and 60%. The situation in the east of the state was worse, with the East Gippsland district and a large part of the Northeast district receiving less than 40% of the long-term average rainfall for May.
The highest monthly total of 141.2 mm was again recorded at Weeaproinah in the Otways region of southwest Victoria. The lowest monthly total of 8.4 mm was recorded at Gelantipy in East Gippsland. Two rainfall recording sites across the state experienced their lowest May rainfall for at least 20 years, and another two sites experienced their lowest May rainfall on record.
Overnight temperatures were below average across the state during May, with daytime temperatures close to normal. Five temperature recording sites experienced their lowest May temperature on record.
