Wyndham City Council 10,000 A trial was conducted with different turf species, establishment techniques and levels of irrigation water salinity in which recycled water performed well.
Werribee Plains Waterwatch – Stage 2  Melbourne Water 550,000  Waterwatch Melbourne is a river health education program that supports community members and schools to be actively involved in monitoring and protecting the health of our rivers and creeks.

Continuing the revegetation link

Avalon Landcare Group  10,000  This project in the Avalon district seeks to control rising soil salinity through revegetation by fencing out areas, control pest plants and animals and continue their groundwater salinity monitoring.
Improving soil health at Balliang
Balliang VFF group 12,800 The project is improving place-based agronomic decision-making through use of soil moisture monitoring equipment to guide sowing choices and fertiliser application.
Kororoit Creek – Rehabilitation Project  Brimbank City Council  20,000 

The project has increased community awareness, and delivered environmental benefits through replacement of unsuitable revegetation works, and removal of damaged or dead vegetation – along a section of the creek at Ardeer.

Understanding the connections between ground and surface water on the Werribee Plains


 

DPI 200,000 This project seeks to understand the connections between ground and surface water on the Werribee Plains by carrying out investigations and to develop draft groundwater policy on the Deutgam Aquifer within the Werribee Irrigation District.
Kororoit Creek Nature Reserve and Walking Path Project  Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek  60,000 The funds have supported the development of a 10 hectare reserve in Altona North and includes a two kilometre looped walking trail, seating and planting of 4,000 indigenous trees and shrubs to complement previous plantings.

Restoration of Ryans Creek – Proposed Melton Botanic Garden Site 

Friends of Melton Botanic Gardens  19,000  The project has enhanced the environmental, aesthetic and cultural values of a stretch of Ryans Creek, Melton.
Audit of Septic Tanks in Moorabool Shire Moorabool Shire 210,000 Funds have been provided to support the conduct of an audit of septic tanks and associated activities within the Shire of Moorabool. 

You Yangs Regional Park community facility development 

Parks Victoria 150,000 Two projects are providing improved access to the park for local communities who rely on the You Yangs for open space, through the design and construction of sustainable, robust public facilities in high priority recreation areas.

Myrniong Biolink Project – Landholder Perception Survey and promotion

Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority 20,000 The project provided essential data on landholder perceptions towards biodiversity, and the enhancement of biodiversity on their farms, prior to commencement of a biolink.

Energy Coach

Western Alliance for Greenhouse Abatement 60,000 The project is reducing energy consumption through auditing, minor works and changes to operating procedures under the guidance of an ‘energy coach’.

Volcanic Plains: Sowing the seeds of change

Werribee Open Range Zoo 193,440  This project is promoting the role of fauna and flora in the native grasslands of the Werribee Plains and their propagation in schools and homes in urban and rural settings.

Carbon Neutral Class A recycling plant

Western Water  700,000  This project has assisted the installation of a biogas and co-generation plant to make the Class A water treatment plant at Melton South carbon-neutral.

Point Cook Recycled Water Main

625,000  The project makes funds available for the design and construction of a recycled water main along Sneydes Road to service sporting ovals and open spaces in new areas of Point Cook.
Natureshare – a web-based environmental data sharing system Australian Plants Society Keilor Plains  17,643  This project has enabled the creation of a self-managing interactive web-based tool for documenting flora, fauna and other environmental information for landowners and groups across the Werribee Plains.

Parwan Gorge Recovery Project (Phases 1 & 2)

Parwan Landcare Group  13,560  TThis project has rehabilitated six sites along 3.5km of the Parwan Gorge escarpment through pest plant and animal control, and revegetation.

Quan Minh Buddhist Temple 

Quan Minh Ecoliving Centre  96,000  Funds were used for the installation of a commercial organic waste management system at a Buddhist community centre for demonstration of organic recycling processes. Waste to landfill has halved as a result.

Through the grasslands – Short Stories of the West Melbourne Catchments – DVD 

Western Melbourne Catchments Network  7,000  Production of a series of short films capturing personal historical and environmental experiences within the Werribee catchment.

Pinkerton Forest & Bush’s Paddock Biodiversity Corridor 

Western Water  33,400  The project will expand the area of Plains Woodland EVC and provide an opportunity for community involvement in biodiversity enhancement and increased awareness.

Bacchus Marsh – Plastic Bag Free 

Bacchus Marsh Community Unltd Inc  5,000  Bacchus Marsh has moved toward being plastic bag free through provision of eco-friendly hemp bags coupled with trader support and education initiatives in schools.

Little River Catchment Project 

Brisbane Ranges Landcare Group  49,398  A landscape scale project to deliver on-ground works for enhancing the environmental, social and economic values of the upper Little River Catchment by improving connectivity/biolinks between existing vegetation such as the Brisbane Ranges National Park, the You Yangs Regional Park, Little River and Balliang and Stony creeks.

Werribee Catchment Landcare stimulus  

Project Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority  165,000  The project will revitalise degraded landscapes on private land in the Werribee River catchment for agriculture and natural resource management – especially in relation to issues associated with water quality, weed control, and biodiversity.

Restoration of Holden Road Reserve & community engagement  

Toolern Vale Landcare Group  14,500  The group has undertaken works on the reserve, with Melton Shire Council, to restore the natural values in the reserve.

Big Roof Project – harvesting water and energy from big rooves 

Western Alliance for Greenhouse Abatement  60,000  The project developed guidelines for rooftop energy and water harvesting that will inform local government planning requirements, engineering considerations and contractual arrangements. An investment calculator was developed in the project.

Isabella Williams Memorial Reserve Upgrade  

Brimbank City Council  300,000  The project supports Stage 1 development of the reserve on the Kororoit Creek at Albanvale, with links to existing shared trails.

Alternative water supply for Point Cook Open Spaces 

City West Water  163,700  Four ovals at three schools will receive additional water through a stormwater harvesting project.

Wind Turbine – Commercial demonstration on industrial site  

Cookers Bulk Oils  71,508  A wind turbine will be erected on commercial premises at Derrimut and used to provide supplementary power for the business and data that can be used when planning other wind generation projects.

Communities making Connections in Conservation 

Friends of Iramoo  26,300 


 

Signage will be constructed for four grasslands in the St Albans area and an awareness program conducted on sustainable management for grasslands.

Improving Biodiversity in Werribee River Gorge 

Grow West  139,150  300ha of a private property has been fenced along 12 km of the Werribee River – complete with rabbit control, revegetation, and exclusion of farm animals.

Connecting Communities – Kororoit Creek Shared Trail Project 

Hobsons Bay City Council  20,000  A shared trail alignment has been developed for the North Altona section of the creek between Old Geelong and Barnes Roads.

Werribee River Shared Trail – Strategy and Development 

Melton Shire  70,000  30km of the Werribee River and Toolern Creek is being assessed to develop alignment and plans for a shared trail between Melton and Werribee, in partnership with Wyndham City Council and Parks Victoria.

Werribee River Park Community Engagement Project 

Parks Victoria  40,920  A project to initiate a Friends group for the new Werribee Regional Park, including works to control weeds and revegetate degraded areas of the park.

Green Waste – undersowing of crops demonstration  

Balliang VFF group, Metro Waste Management Group, SITA, DPI

28,780  Assessment of green waste and compost as a soil conditioner in broadacre cropping as an alternative market for urban waste recycling centres.

Focus Farms

Past projects: Stage 1

The first stage of the project focused on the opportunities provided by the ready access to recycled water and the need to address related waterway issues.  $10M was committed to a range of projects over the period 2004 - 2007 and some projects are still being rolled out.

Evaluation

As part of the project governance process, an evaluation of the Stage 1 of the project was undertaken.  Two consultancies were commissioned, one to evaluate the project and the other to evaluate the governance processes.
