June 2011
This section provides a summary of construction and related activities that have occurred each month. For current information on construction, works notifications and traffic advisories go to www.aquasure.com.au.
As work continues this month on the coastal park surrounding the Victorian Desalination Project, work has also begun on the green roof with the first of 100,000 plants being planted.
This planting will continue over the next few months and comprises 25 different species of indigenous ground covers, tussocks and low-lying shrubs specifically chosen to suit the coastal conditions of the plant site.
The reverse osmosis building passed a major achievement this month with all of its major structural steel in place. As is done with many construction projects, a tree was placed on top of the building to signify and celebrate the completion of this phase.
Pre-commissioning has also become a focus on the project. Twenty of the 72 dual media pressure filters (DMPF), which filter seawater before it is desalinated, have now been successfully bubble tested and another 33 are being loaded with filtration media comprising gravel, sand and crushed anthracite coal.
Almost all of the reverse osmosis membrane racks have been installed and more than half of the seawater lift pump station concrete has been poured.
Preparations are being made for hydrotesting of the transfer pipeline. Completed sections of the pipeline will be filled with water and then pressurised.
There are more than 4000 people working on the project. About 90 per cent of the pipeline and power line have been laid. About $1.2 billion worth of contracts have been awarded for design and construction with 79 per cent to Australian companies (62 per cent to Victorian companies).
