The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is managing the delivery of the Victorian Desalination Project on behalf of the Government.

To do this, DSE has established a dedicated project team within its Capital Projects Division.

Since June 2007, the DSE Desalination Project Team has successfully steered the project through the planning and environmental approvals phase, as well as the competitive tender phase to select a private partner to finance, design, construct, build and operate the project.

DSE is now managing the 30-year contract with AquaSure to ensure Victorians get a world-class water security asset.

The project is being delivered as a Public Private Partnership under the Victorian Government’s Partnerships Victoria policy.

DSE’s work has ensured the plant, pipeline and power supply design reflects community needs, environmental management requirements and leading global technologies.

This has resulted in Victoria building the world’s most innovative desalination project defined by its unique design, state-of-the-art technology and environmental credentials.

DSE’s Desalination Project Team has managed:        

• environmental investigations
• planning and design investigations
• consultation with communities and key stakeholders
• land acquisition and compensation
• obtaining key approvals
• tendering and contract award
• design review
• environmental compliance.
