The Victorian Desalination Project will provide significant job opportunities during the construction phase and a major boost to the local region, including opportunities for local business.
Desalination jobs and contracts picture.
Up to 1700 direct jobs will be created during the construction phase with as many as 3050 indirect jobs also being created through contracts to supply products and services.

The operation of the plant will result in about 150 full-time equivalent jobs – 50 directly involved in operations and 100 indirectly to support operations, maintenance and servicing.

The project is expected to stimulate a $1 billion economic boost to Victoria during construction.

Major contracts have been awarded to Victorian companies, including $150 million pipe manufacturing contract to Tyco Water, $43 million power cable manufacturing contract to Olex, $17 million to OneSteel to supply structural and reinforcing steel and $7 million to Page Steel to fabricate and install structural steel on the plant site.

As of July 2010, $1 billion worth of contracts had been awarded, with three quarters to Australian companies and two thirds to Victorian companies.

Jobs and sub-contracts will go to local and regional people. Businesses from Wonthaggi, Bendigo, Dandenong and other regional areas have won contracts.

The construction phase is expected to spur the local economy with demand from a new workforce for products from local suppliers and business for retailers, cafes, fuel suppliers, caterers and other service providers.
