Changes to Water Management in Northern Victoria
The Water Act 2007 commenced in March 2008 and was amended to extend its powers under a referral by State Governments in December 2008. The Act gives the Commonwealth powers to change governance arrangements in the Murray-Darling Basin, extend the coverage of Commonwealth Government responsibility in managing the water market and water charge rules, and allows the development of a Basin Plan.
The Victorian Government has responded to documents released by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority and has formed a regional advisory group to support community consultation during the development of the Basin Plan.
