Sourcing Water to Return Snowy Flows

A joint government enterprise, trading as Water for Rivers, has now been established to source the required water to meet flow targets, primarily through investing in water savings projects.

In addition to providing $150 million for the enterprise, the Victorian Government has allocated funding over 10 years for studies and related environmental works in the Snowy River and in Northern Victoria.

Key Victorian projects returning flows to the Snowy include:

The Lake Mokoan project with an estimated 18 gigalitre saving to be allocated to the Snowy River.

Channel Automation in the Central Goulburn irrigation District, which aims to achieve 18 gigalitres per annum in water savings which can be returned to the river system for use in environmental flows.

Woorinen piping of stock and domestic water supplies, which has water efficiency savings of 1.5 gigalitres per annum which can be used for environmental flows

Normanville pipeline project, which replaced 35 kilometres of open channels with 295 kilometres of pipelines, returning 3.9 gigalitres per annum of water efficiency savings to the river system as environmental flows

Further details of flow-returning projects can be found at the Water for Rivers website.
