Improving flows is just one aspect of improving the Snowy River’s ecological health.  

A comprehensive program of Snowy River Rehabilitation works is also being undertaken co-operatively by Government agencies, community groups and landowners.

A new spillway and outlet has been constructed on the Jindabyne township side of the existing dam wall.

Environmental releases will be drawn from near the reservoir surface to avoid adverse temperature problems.

Victoria’s Department of Sustainability and Environment together with East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority have an on ground rehabilitation program, designed to compliment the planned increased flows to improve river health. This includes:

Planting reeds helps stabilise sandbeds, allowing silt to settle

  • Rainforest restoration. A 4 year program to re-establish riparian and rainforest plant species.
  • Willow eradication program. A cross border, multi year program aimed at eradicating willows from the Snowy River catchment.
  • Australian Bass study. An investigation into Australian Bass populations, habitat requirements, recruitment of young and migration patterns.
  • Work to involve local schools in understanding work to improve the health of the Snowy River.
A program to provide fencing and off stream watering around the Snowy floodplain upstream of Princes Highway bridge.
