Wimmera

Area: 23 500 km2 Population: 44 000

The Wimmera River System, the largest landlocked system in Victoria, is heavily harvested to supply water to the Wimmera-Mallee, and suffers from salinity and lack of flows.

Returning water to the system by piping the Wimmera-Mallee stock and domestic channel system is helping to revive the Wimmera and protect some of its high value tributaries.

Wimmera CMA is managing environmental flows to alleviate salinity in the lower Wimmera and protect platypus and blackfish habitat in the MacKenzie River.

Regional River Health Strategy

The Wimmera Waterway Heath Strategy – A Regional River Health Strategy was developed by the Wimmera CMA in consultation with their local community and key stakeholders. It is an umbrella strategy that sets priorities and direction for the protection and enhancement of rivers.

The Wimmera Waterway Heath Strategy – A Regional River Health Strategy identifies river health related objectives, activities and targets for rivers located within the Millicent and Wimmera river basins.

Large Scale River Restoration Project

Returning life to Wimmera waterways

Returning life to Wimmera waterways incorporates activities to maximise river health benefits from regional water savings through identification of additional barriers to environmental flow delivery, modification of regulating structures to improve delivery and efficiency of the Environmental Water Reserve, and development of a strategic restoration plan for waterways where the Environmental Water Reserve will be returned through savings generated by the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline.
