West Gippsland

Area: 17 685 km2 Population: 169 000

The West Gippsland Region provides 95% of Victoria’s electricity, 60% of Melbourne’s water storage capacity, and 20% of Australia’s milk production.

The region’s catchments drain south to Anderson and Corner inlets, and east to Gippsland Lakes. Activities within the catchments alter water flows and quality, affecting the health of rivers and internationally important wetlands.

Community, industry and government are working together to restore the health of the Thomson and Macalister rivers and, ultimately, that of the Gippsland Lakes.

Regional River Health Strategy

The West Gippsland Regional River Health Strategy was developed by the West Gippsland CMA in consultation with their local community and key stakeholders. It is an umbrella strategy that sets priorities and direction for the protection and enhancement of rivers.

The West Gippsland Regional River Health Strategy identifies river health related objectives, activities and targets for rivers located within the Thomson, LaTrobe and South Gippsland river basins.

Large Scale River Restoration Project

Thomson Macalister- Repairing the damage

West Gippsland’s large scale river restoration project, Thomson Macalister- Repairing the damage, aims to connect the Latrobe system with enhanced riparian corridors of the Traralgon Creek and lower Thomson River, including removal of exotic vegetation, revegetation with indigenous vegetation, fencing to exclude stock and restoration of critical wetland environments fringing the Latrobe River. The project includes a study into fish passage and links to the management of the Environmental Water Reserve (EWR).
