North East
The Ovens River is one of two rivers listed in the Victorian River Health Strategy that requires special management because of its environmental values. It contributes 14 per cent of total flow in the Murray-Darling Basin, is critical for environmental flows in the Murray River, and sustains a vibrant forest and wetlands system in the lower reach.
The North East Catchment Management Authority (CMA) will be trialling a riparian Bush Tender program that will encourage adjacent landholders to manage their land for environmental outcomes.
Regional River Health Strategy
The North East Regional River Health Strategy was developed by the North East CMA in consultation with their local community and key stakeholders. It is an umbrella strategy that sets priorities and direction for the protection and enhancement of rivers.
The North East Regional River Health Strategy identifies river health related objectives, activities and targets for rivers located within the Upper Murray, Kiewa and Ovens river basins.

Large Scale River Restoration Project
The Ovens River- Health Line for the Murray
This project aims to deliver integrated river health outcomes for the Ovens River and associated tributaries that have identified high ecological values. The project incorporates feasibility studies (fish passage design, guidelines and waterway action plan development) and onground works.
Onground works will be undertaken in areas where waterway action plans have already been developed with local communities including Reedy Creek, King River Anabranch, Happy Valley creek, 15Mile creek, Deep Creek and lower Ovens to address high priority risks identified in the Regional River Health Strategy.
