Mallee
Area: 43 000 km2 Population: 62 500
Rivers and waterways in the Mallee include the Murray River, its anabranches and floodplain, and sections of Yarriambiack and Outlet Creeks and Tyrrell and Lalbert Creeks. There are more than 900 wetlands, several of which are recognised as internationally significant.
In a region with rapid irrigation development, the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) plays a key role monitoring new irrigation development, managing salinity and reducing regional flows of salt and other pollutants into the river.
Frontage Action Plans improve river health and environmental water flows and support Living Murray ’icon‘ sites such as Hattah Lakes and Lindsay Wallpolla.
Regional River Health Strategy
The Mallee Regional River Health Strategy was developed by the Mallee CMA in consultation with their local community and key stakeholders. It is an umbrella strategy that sets priorities and direction for the protection and enhancement of rivers.
The Mallee Regional River Health Strategy identifies river health related objectives, activities and targets for rivers located within the Mallee river basin.

Large Scale River Restoration Project
Enhancing the Murray River Zone in the Mallee- Murray River Frontage Action Plan (FAP) Implementation
The Victorian Murray has significant floodplain and riparian areas along the Murray River. The Enhancing the Murray River Zone in the Mallee project aims to continue implementation of objectives within the three 5-year Murray River Frontage Action Plans: (Merbein to the SA Border, Robinvale to Merbein and Nyah to Robinvale) including weed control, riparian habitat protection and enhancement, erosion control, and environmental watering.
The activities associated with this project are important in consolidating the ecological benefits of improved water management along the Murray River and Living Murray ‘Icon’ sites.
