East Gippsland

Area: 21 050 km2 Population: 42 000

The rivers and estuaries of East Gippsland are important natural systems, highly regarded by Victorians for their social, environmental and economic values.

Some East Gippsland rivers are particularly special and recognised as being worthy of ‘Victorian Heritage River Status’. Within two of these ‘Victorian Heritage River’ catchments – the Mitchell and Bemm Rivers – the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (CMA) is working with the community to protect and encourage natural river restoration by removing significant weeds (including willows), stabilising the river bank and providing suitable habitat.

Regional River Health Strategy

The East Gippsland Regional River Health Strategy was developed by the East Gippsland CMA in consultation with their local community and key stakeholders. It is an umbrella strategy that sets priorities and direction for the protection and enhancement of rivers.

The East Gippsland Regional River Health Strategy identifies river health related objectives, activities and targets for rivers located within the Snowy, Tambo, Mitchell and East Gippsland river basins.

Large Scale River Restoration Project

Managing the Health of East Gippsland’s Heritage Rivers

Works in the East Gippsland region will achieve large scale benefits for the Heritage listed river systems, the Mitchell and Bemm Rivers, and is an integral part of the ‘whole of catchment’ approach to waterway management.

The project incorporates willow control, revegetation, fencing and community capacity building programs on the Mitchell and Bemm Rivers.
