Melbourne Water
Melbourne Water is the floodplain management authority for the Melbourne Metropolitan area, the Werribee and Upper Maribyrnong catchments and catchments which flow into Western Port Bay.
Through its Waterways Group, Melbourne Water manages the rivers, waterways and trunk and regional drains in its management area. Municipal Councils manage the local drainage system. Melbourne Water has many of the powers of a catchment management authority and implements floodplain management plans and flood warning systems. It is a referral authority, under the Planning and Environment Act 1987, with regard to the development of land identified in planning schemes as being subject to riverine flooding or overland flow paths.
Melbourne Water has undertaken a major mapping project to identify land subject to overland flow paths in urban areas.
